Reshma Sohoni: European Entrepreneurs – the recipe for success

Reshma Sohoni, the Seedcamp CEO, opened the second day of the How To Web 2010 edition. Her presentation was entitled “European Entrepreneurs – the recipe for success”.

In her presentation, Reshma spoke about the Seedcamp micro-fund and program for entrepreneurs and shared some DOs and DON’Ts for European startups.

DOs:

- be commercial, not just techie;

- be assertive, positive, optimistic about your product;

- be awesome at helping start-ups as you are;

- be open to going where the opportunities are

DON’Ts:

- be afraid to think big

- be apologetic for being from Eastern Europe

- be secretive about your idea

- talk to good people

- use smaller markets as excuse.

The 3 very important elements for a start-up from Reshma’s point of view are Passion, Customer Thinking and Execution.

According to Luka the 3 key factors to building a successful local community are the following:

Katy Turner: You’ve got a great app, now all you need are customers

Katy Turner from Eden Ventures spoke at How To Web 2010 about the importance of customer development in a successful start-up and about what you need to do in order to get customers.

In her presenation Katy compared startups to coThe main ideas of Katy’s presentation were:

  • The marketplace is crowded so making an impact is critical;
  • You need more than technology in order to build a fan base;
  • You should try to get the audience dancing and delight your customers throughout their experience;
  • Construct personas of 3 or 4 of your target audience representative members and try to find out as many insights about them as possible;
  • Image and a strong brand can set you apart;
  • You shouldn’t push technology but rather try to focus on real user benefits;
  • You should remember to monitor and measure your audience and its reactions from the beginning.

Boštjan Špetič: How big is blogging really?

The second speaker of the How To Web 2010 conference was Boštjan Špetič, the Zemanta CEO.

Boštjan’s presentation was entitled: “Measuring the blogosphere… or how big is it really?”. In his presentation Boštjan compared data regarding the blogosphere size obtained from different sources and highlighted the huge differences between these sources.

The bottom line of Boštjan’s presentation was that:

  • The blogosphere is 3 to 5 times overestimated;
  • It is very important to measure what you are working with as “If you can’t measure it, it doesn’t exist”.
