Patrick de Laive: The future of location based services is not what you think it will be

Patrick de Laive, the initiator of The Next Web conference and blog, was one of the How To Web 2010 speakers. Patrick spoke about the future of location based services.

Some of the key points of Patrick’s presentation were:

  • Location aware will became the standard for all apps;
  • Checkins and badges are not the future of location based services from Patrick’s point of view;
  • Real people care a lot less about privacy than you might think if the benefits are substantial. So, unlike popular belief, privacy is not the issue for location based services (it’s just a popular thing to say every time a new phenomenon comes up);
  • Present LBS services are not bringing enough value to the user. The cost of checking in and sharing your location data are too high for the mainstream user in comparison to its benefits;
  • The ultimate LBS app is all things social combined with location, augmented reality, mobile payments, the ultimate friend-finder.
